Sump Coffee Owner Rockin’ the Beard

I was reading an article awhile back and saw this pic from a Square conference. I just had to give out major kudos to Scott Carey, the owner of Sump Coffee. My beard salutes you, Scott!

I had the pleasure of being a judge for the comp and had a great time. I also had the opportunity to fellowship with a few old friends and make new ones.

Beards and Baseball

I recently had the opportunity to judge a beard contest for our local minor league baseball team, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. It was a blast! Aside from the contest itself, the whole family went along and we enjoyed a great game.

There were some great beards in attendance. I ended up choosing an older gentleman with an excellent Santa Claus style beard (back row with the red shirt). Here’s some photos for you and a video of the pre-game interview I did from the 1st baseline dugout roof.

Oh, did I forget to mention, Mountain Man from Duck Dynasty was also there with us. I had the chance to meet him. Yes, he really does talk that slow.

My thanks to the Pelicans staff for an excellent time, the Mountain Man Soap for the shirt (and for keeping me smelling good), and 5.11 Tactical for the sweet camo kilt.

Down with the Beard Tax!

My wee son of 9yo, although beardless at that age, is still a great respecter of the facefur. In one of his recent homeschool assignments he came across the onerous beard tax of Tsar Peter the Great.

In honor of putting down that tax, he drew a lovely beard comic featuring beard ninjas and a beard monster called the Beardatron.

My little dude loves selling his art, so if you’re interested in a signed copy, get in touch. All proceeds go straight to him. I think he’s saving up for a new game.

Of Friends and Friends’ Beards

In celebration of my friend Robert’s beard’s birthday, I thought I’d drop some beardly goodness.

Some call him Santa. I call him an awesome bearded Lego.

Could Batman be any more awesome? Yes. Yes, he can…with a beard.

Here’s some Bible beardness from 2 Kings 1:8: And they answered him, He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather about his loins. And he said, It is Elijah the Tishbite.

Dr. Faustus, a common Captain America villain is shown here with a massive dude ‘stache. Over time he ends up with an equally massive full beard.

And I’ll end with a lovely pic of pro NBA player Chris Anderson sporting some manfur.

Professional Bearding At Its Best

So, just what is a professional beardsmith? I’ll let you decide. I’d love to hear what you think.

While you ponder it, here’s some inspiration.

Check out the sweet red beard on this Wonder Woman cover. It reminds me of me.

Wonder Woman

I’m an old school Steelers fan from way back when Terry Bradshaw and Mean Joe Greene played. With beards like this though, it might be time to be a fan again.

Here’s a great entry from TC McCarthy’s book Germline.

A Beardly Review of UFC 154

My dad got the pay-per-view for the latest UFC fight a week or so ago. Normally we won’t shell out for the fights now that they show most of the prelims on cable tv and the fight itself usually shows up on a highlight reel within a year. This one was different though. It was time for St Pierre to make a comeback. We’ve always been big fans of the Canadian neighbor to the north and were anxious to see what happened.

The fights were great, but I noticed a very beardly aspect to the entire proceedings. Almost all of the fights featured fighters sporting anything from scruff to full beardness. I thought I’d review the affair from a facial hair point-of-view.

In the first two prelim fights the bearded fighter won.

In the third fight Cyrille Diabate’s beard beat Chad Grigg’s lambchops.

Pablo Garza’s goatee beat Mark Hominick’s clean shaven face.

Francis Carmont’s tiny goatee beat Tom Lawlor’s full beard. I have to wonder too, because I never could see it clearly, does Lawlor have a tattoo of a raccoon with a sword?

Johny Hendricks massive beardness beat Martin Kampmann. Kudos to Hendricks for the Beard of the Night honors!

Almost better than the beardliness, the quote of the night had to go to Joe Rogan when he said, “How fat can you be and still be a referee?”

From what I can tell, the advantedge provided by fierce facial hair gives the fighters an edge over their smooth-faced counterparts. In other words, the moral of the story is that a beard makes for a better fighter.

Beard Hygiene

I’m asked occasionally what type of care I give my royal beardness, so I thought I’d do a post on my beardly hygiene.

  • I gently but ever so carefully wash the beard a couple of times a week with shampoo.

  • My smokin’ hot wife bought me some Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist Deep Conditioner that I use once a week. The beard loves it. He says it’s like getting a massage.
  • Sometimes I’ll also sneak some of my wife’s Suave Professionals conditioner, which is coconut scented and makes the beard smell like a tropical island.
  • On my head and body I use a Dove Men’s loofa and Dove Men’s liquid soap. Makes me smell like a dude. A clean dude.
  • After the shower and each morning I comb out the beardness, but I leave the grey hairs alone for now.

That’s about it. I don’t get all American Psycho clean like Christian Bale in the movie, but I smell good and maintain a fierce look to my visage. It’s entirely possible to look like an outlaw but still be clean.
