Facial Hair is a Privilege Not a Right

I am a huge fan of facial hair and believe all men (and possibly a few women judging by what I’ve seen) should have the opportunity to sprout some face fur. I believe this in spite of what their wives and bosses say. But there are exceptions. Although every man should try out the facial hair thing, some of them should then just step back and say No.

As you’ll see from the following article, not every man deserves the hair his face can grow.

Sump Coffee Owner Rockin’ the Beard

I was reading an article awhile back and saw this pic from a Square conference. I just had to give out major kudos to Scott Carey, the owner of Sump Coffee. My beard salutes you, Scott!

There’s a heavily bearded Santa Claus looking guy on The Biggest Loser this season. His name is Roy. Unfortunately he got eliminated before losing his Santa-like girth.

Chillin’ with Grizzly Adams

Just finished reading a dog-eared, scuffed, and beaten old paperback copy of The Legend of Grizzly Adams by Richard Dillon. I’ve had this book for a long time, since I was a wee lad. I grew up on the television show featuring Grizzly and his pet but still wild bear named Ben.

I didn’t realize until reading through the book and then Adams’ Wikipedia entry that the show was based on a true story. I never knew the guy was real. I’m pretty stoked now to see just how much of an influence he had on the culture of the time and even now.

The main reason I wanted to bring him up is because of the fierce beard that he always sported. As a benefit to you, I noted the beard-centric quotes from the book for your reading enjoyment.

“He was a mystery man as well as a mountain man who wore his hair long and his face bristling with a heavy beard and moustache.” p10

“For all of his bushy beard, John Adams was old neither in years or in spirit.” p10

“Adams was no common, every-day character…His large, grizzled beard, his quaint yet expressive features; his peculiar tone of voice; his oddly fashioned garments, his easy self-possession when ‘stirring up’ the animals;  his remarkable influence over them.” p186

Ryan Hurst, Sons of Anarchy Beardsmith

I’ve been watching Sons of Anarchy on Netflix for a while. Love the show, and I’m a bit peeved I never gave it a chance in the days when I rocked cable tv in the house. One of my favorite characters is the quiet, unassuming, but fiercely loyal Opie Winston. I love the way this guy rolls. When he needs to put a beatdown on someone, he always willing, or he can be supersweet to his kids or his porn star girlfriend.

My wife looked him up because she thought he looked familiar. Wow! I was surprised when I found out just who Ryan Hurst was. He the guy I alwasy assumed was stereotyped as the goofy all-american sidekick in most of his roles before he became the bad-arse Opie of the Samcro gang. Past roles include the goofy solider and the goofy football player. Look him up on IMDB to check him out.

He can rock a good beard when he wants to. I hope he stays with the more manly roles for a while.

Here’s to Opie’s beard!

Jesus, the Ultimate Beardman

For today, I thought I’d profile The Ultimate Beardman, who I know as my God and Savior. He has many names. Many of you know Him as Christ or Jesus. There’s even a really big book all about him that’s probably sitting on your bookshelf, hopefully not covered with dust. Any time I catch flack from my fellow churchpeople about my beard (they can be so stuffy at times) I only have to point at Jesus.

In case you were wondering about those occasional paintings you see of a clean-shaven, wussy-looking Jesus. Simply not true. Most of those were painted by neo-feminist girlie men who wanted to feminize Jesus down to their level, to reduce his manliness. Have no doubt, in His day, in that culture, Jesus had a real man-beard.
